From subbes, the most amazing, gripping read that I have come across in nearly a year: A SomethingAwful forum post about a former homeless. 23 pages of text, with things that will make you chuckle darkly, make you cry, and turn your stomach due to plain all-too-human dismissal of fellow life. Very good food for thought, and gives the best reasons for not being Libertarian (i.e., disbelief in social costs). My favorite quote by the author: "Not to derail the thread, but the first time a libertarian explained their views to me, I thought they were just being ironic. No lie." It's emotionally too much for me to read in one sitting.

You know, I think the mathematics community has the best posts in all of LiveJournal. And that's a tame thread.

Were you aware of being_homeless? Her earlier posts, mostly made from public libraries etc., chronicle being homeless in Boston. Then she got interviewed by a major newspaper, and her condition had improved. I had not read her for a while; apparently now she's in the hospital....
